The Building
The building at 503 Hackney Road has stood since at least 1856. It began as John Chandler & Co.'s brewery, supplying 35 East London pubs for more than half a century. A 120-foot chimney rose over Hackney Road from 1895. The trade press wrote about the company. John Edmund Chandler, F.R.G.S. - a gentleman brewer who owned a steam yacht and sailed the Mediterranean - was the man behind a brewery that served the working pubs of Bethnal Green. He died in 1898, aged 38. The contradiction is the story.
In 1911 Charrington's absorbed the business and the building became a workshop. It stayed one through the decades when Hackney changed around it. At some point the Mills family came to own the plot, and three generations held it across the post-war years and into the present. In 2015, Kevin Mills - with Jon and James Penn - restored the building that had been waiting.
The exposed brick, the timber beams, the ironwork, the skylight - these are not design choices. They are what was always there. We kept the bones and added modern hospitality. The result is a venue with real warmth and texture, not a blank-canvas warehouse that needs dressing up.
We are right between Bethnal Green and Cambridge Heath, in the heart of East London. Two minutes from Cambridge Heath Overground, eight minutes from Bethnal Green on the Central line. Buses stop directly outside.
How We Work
Most event venues hand you a list of approved suppliers and wish you luck. You end up coordinating a caterer, a florist, a bar team, a DJ, a coordinator - each with their own timeline, their own invoice, and their own idea of how your day should run.
We do it differently.
At The Hackney, everything is in-house. Our kitchen prepares your menu. Our bar team pours your drinks. Our events team plans your day. Our coordinator runs it on the morning. One team who know the building, know each other, and know exactly how to make your event feel effortless.

Jon co-founded The Hackney in 2015 with James Penn and Kevin Mills. He started in tech and finance before leaving the corporate world to build his own businesses. His focus at The Hackney is sales and marketing - making sure the people who would love this venue actually find it.
James co-founded The Hackney with Jon Penn and Kevin Mills in 2015. He started his career as a City lawyer in corporate and private equity, before moving into sales and then to entrepreneurship. At The Hackney he leads operations, oversees the finances, and shapes the strategic direction with his co-founders.
Hugo is your first point of contact. He runs every venue tour, handles enquiries, and makes sure your event runs perfectly from start to finish.
Eva manages the planning process from booking to the big day. She coordinates every detail so you do not have to.
Marco leads our in-house kitchen. Modern European cuisine, seasonal menus, locally sourced ingredients. From exquisitely plated courses to abundant sharing feasts, every dish is designed to bring people together over beautifully crafted plates.
Every coffee, cocktail, and course is made by our team - all employed by The Hackney, not outsourced. The same people who serve your morning flat white are the ones pouring champagne at your wedding.
