Our Coffee

Our House Espresso

Brazilian at heart, finished with a coffee from Honduras, and poured on Hackney Road in a restored 1856 brewery.

The Cup

What's in the cup

Our house espresso is smooth and sweet with a clean finish: chocolate cake first, then butterscotch and praline, with a hint of raisin. It's made to work both ways, as a straight espresso or long black, and with milk in a flat white.

The Origins

Where it comes from

The heart of it comes from Minas Gerais in south-east Brazil: three varietals, Catuai, Mundo Novo and Bourbon, dried whole in the cherry under the sun. That natural process is where the chocolate and butterscotch come from.

To finish it, we add a fully washed, sun-dried coffee from Lepaterique in Honduras, seven villages in the mountains of Francisco Morazán where families grow coffee alongside the food they live on. Its Lempira and Ihcafe 90 varietals give the cup its clean, sweet finish.

The Decaf

Decaf, made properly

Our decaf comes from the same part of Brazil. The caffeine is taken out with water and a natural compound made from fermented sugarcane, which keeps the flavour of the bean: chocolate, black cherry and brown sugar. It's made to the same recipe as everything else, and it's just as good with oat milk.

The Method

How we make it

Every shot is weighed: 18 grams of ground coffee in, 36 grams of espresso out, pulled in 25 to 30 seconds. Oat milk comes as standard.

The Idea

Why it matters here

The Hackney is a converted 1856 brewery, a building made for making things properly. We think a cup of coffee deserves the same: one espresso we know inside out, made the same careful way every morning. Some of you will remember us as the Hackney Coffee Company. Good coffee is where we started, and it's still at the heart of what we do.

Come and try it
